April LAN aftermath
Topped out at 14 people, I had a lot of fun, we played a heap of COD4, a heap of Demigod, a small amount of HAWX and nothing else.

Someone left a computer here (other than Luke who planned on it) please own up to it and come collect it some time soon.

Some people mentioned that COD4 was a little counter-strikey, but I'd say the fact that you don't have to wait long for re-spawns makes it a lot more enjoyable, and the lack of an in round buy phase also keeps it flowing more.

Now I need to keep packing up, then I'm going to play around with demigod in single player, maybe read up on strategy etc.

For the people who went, did you find the Lan as fun as others? I got the feeling that there was a bit of trouble trying to get people to all want to play the same game

COD4 shits on CS because...

1. Its faster (movement speed and general pacing)
2. People have more health - not like Quake 3, but you don't drop from 2 bullets.
3. KNIVES!!!!
4. Spawn mechanics (spawning near teammates, map balancing so teams are on opposite sides)
5. Not round based.
6. Unlocks don't "make" the game, but still add flavour.
7. Its not CS.
8. There is no de_dust.

TF2 was a bit disappointing - we were playing 7 v 7 COD4, and then could only manage 5 v 5 TF2.

Demigod needs fucking patching. I think I'll buy it. Great fun when its working though.

I actually didn't really want to leave, but had promised myself to be somewhere after - I was having quite a bunch of fun.

I read an article recently (sorry no link, it was re-linked on slashdot though) where Stardock was blaming piracy for a lot of the issues that legitimate users were having.

Essentially they said that the game makes a lot of http calls to their servers for community features such as auto patching, friends lists etc.

NFI whether that's what our systems were having trouble with but even if it is, then they should fix that, they should fix it good (meanwhile perhaps a hosts file entry would cause it to time out quicker?)

Stardock should shut the fuck up. Piracy didn't cause your problems - poor coding did.

The other PC is Leigh's

CoD4 was really fun. Reminded me of the old days of CS. The way it's set up (squad spawning, custom classes etc) is just such a step up from CS tho.

I found the LAN as fun as usual. A lot of fucking around getting Demigod to play, but at least we had a laugh about it and didn't rage. CoD4 was an unexpected gem, and TF2 was fun, if not as epic as usual.

Adam and I are interested in playing Demigod semi regularly over the net. We'll prolly both buy it, so it'd be online games, but anyone else who buys it should play with us :)

Thanks again for hosting dude :)

LAN was awesome, Demigod was sweet but it need some time to fix the bugs and perhaps work out some balancing (Stardock are never afraid to play with balancing to get the game right they did it with GalCivII a fair bit). I will buy it once they fix it, probably don't want to play it at a LAN till then either! But will be up for games over hamachi (sp?).

CoD4 was sweet once I got the hang of it which didn't take too long was good that no one was bullshit better than the rest like in Q3 or even TF2. I found hawx a bit dry and repetitive I love flight sims but modern ones are too lock/missile/repeat. Didn't actually play TF2 at all :P

It was a good change from our usual fare. We didn't play L4D, and barely touched TF2, and while they're awesome, so was the other stuff we played.
COD4 was great, that should definitely should up again next lan. And most people will have upgrades then for the weapons, so that'll be sweet
Demigod was fun, but needs fixing. The amount of effort we went through for it was ridiculous
Hawx was interesting. maybe with more people? but i can't see it holding peoples interest for long, its just a circling missile spam fest.

I enjoyed it.

COD4 was alot better than I would have thought, but would be better if it had some sort of forced teamwork (objectives or something). When it's massive firefights down roads it's awesome, when it's lots of running around getting into 1 on 1 fights it reminds me too much of CS. Overall it's pretty awesome though and worth playing at LAN again.

Was dissapointed that we didn't play TF2 properly at least once (the one game we did had too few players). Same with L4D, a versus of that is always heaps of fun.

Demigod kicked ass, but sucked that so many people were having trouble with it. It might need some balancing, although now I've played in single player with the different characters only Torch Bearer and Queen of Thorns seem to have issues (The archer guy is way better than I thought he was once I played as him).

Hawx was fun for a bit, but there doesn't seem to be much more than flying in circles and shooting missiles alot.

Whats wrong with Queen of Thorns? She's ridiculously powerful in the circle spike/spike wave/siege build.

I don't think that the minion build is overly powerful - but I haven't played it with a focus on minion buffing powerups or with good micro-management.

The Archer guy is ricockulous at hero killing (Snipe Shot + visibilty tag). Can also solo towers early on (as soon as you get the first range upgrade).

I don't think it suffers from great balance issues - just player's not "doing it right" issues.

to be honest the only character I haven't tried is Queen of Thorns, so I'll give her a go as well. In the LAN games we played she didn't seem as dangerous as others.

I played around with her in single - she is light in terms of item requirements - and can completely eliminate almost any amount of creeps in 1 ability.

Give her a life steal item (I think its around 17.5k from the artifact shop) and she would be untouchable.

Seriously, just channel the spike circle (comes from within in a 360 radius), then spike wave, then siege, with compost in there if you're going for siege/building destruction or Spike bubble/absorb.

Play heavy offence on creeps, focus on mana regen/pool items, when you run - spike bubble then close up and love the regen.
