So someone? pulled our beds apart when we were moving, and got a zip lock bag and taped all the small losable bolts and widgets to the large un-losable metal cross bar.
YOU ROCK! Thanks for being so thoughtful and competent :)
I didn't actually see who it was, at first I thought James because Amanda and Luke both said he did it, but maybe it was someone else... either way, big thanks |

I got home and there was beer and pizza and ice cream.
She has done tons of washing and the dishwasher will be working within three weeks.
She's making our room look beautiful and she made the gas heating out the front work.

I'm lerninating electricity!
I now know what 3 phase, 2 phase and 1 phase power is, I now know what a surge is and what a spike is, how the power distribution network works, and it's only a matter of time until I know how plugging too much crap into the one outlet causes problems!

| Can Australians Inherit Debt? |

Qestion: In Australia, is it possible to inherit debt. E.G. parent maxes out several credit cards, dies, has no insurance, no assets, wills everything to his only son. Is the debt nullified, or does the son have to pay?

Well we've moved in and probably set up about 40-50% of the house.
MASSIVE THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED
The job still took all day, but was vastly easier than it would have been alone. You guys rock my world.
Having people help us set up the kitchen, lounge and gaming room was also a stellar idea. We put them all to use more or less immediately and it's going to make this week a whole lot easier on us.
I'm really liking this house far more now that I'm living in it and have my stuff in it. It's bigger than I thought it was. There's also tons of little things I want to change/do/add like light fittings, door handles, electronics, cat5 wiring paint etc. That'll probably happen slowly over the next 6-12 months.
I'm just wondering how long I can hold Amanda back from tearing out our laundry wall :P
Went back to the old place on Sunday, Amanda cleaned the inside while I got the ladder up and cleaned the guttering, mowed what lawn I could reach, destroyed the mower while mowing too close to the hard rubbish (it looks like I collected some bailing twine or something. Feeling pretty sore today, totally worth it though.
Slept like crap as well, got up at 5:30, left home at 6:53 and got to work at about 7:50, Amanda gave Luke and I a lift to Surrey Hills station, so theoretically I could get a zone 1 ticket and a pack of 2 hr zone 2's and only validate when someone is on the exit gate, but I probably won't do that |

| The bus ate my ticket! |

So I got on the bus yesterday, put my ticket into the validation machine, and it didn't come out.
It wasn't expired (it was a yearly with a bit over a month left on it) and it didn't beep or anything.
The bus driver took down my name and number and told me to call the depo and that I'd need to buy a ticket on the way home.
( the resolution was not satisfactory ) |

Wow.
1 - Frogboy reckons connection issues are going to go away (I'm dubious but maybe) 2 - They're looking at a demo that allows online play 3 - Everyone who's currently bought a copy is going to get a 50% discount coupon for another purchase. Anyone on the fence want to get half price? I'm probably going to give mine to Luke, but I think Geoff and Rory will have coupons |

Now that Luke has brought plastic drums to the house I don't really need to be storing my drum kit.
Does anyone else want it? If you're happy to pick it up and store it then it's yours (please bring them to grantville) otherwise I'll probably either sell em on ebay or I'll throw them out. |

A few people have been sending me this article. It's got some points but overall I think it's misleading and wrong.
Here's the most offensive misleading quote: "Anything that puts additional cash in the hands of buyers … results merely in more expensive houses."
Now that's almost a true statement, but it doesn't apply to FHOG in the way you'd assume. Using numbers that aren't real, say a property is worth 100k. Both I and an investor have 100k, but the investor has been buying houses before. Gov't comes along and gives all First Home Owners 20k. This causes the property to rise in price to 120k (maybe more maybe less, the exact rise doesn't matter). I am now better off, I have 20k more to spend on this property than the investor and it is therefore more affordable to me than it is to the investor.
The second thing is the way they say rent money is not dead money, again, it's true but misleading. If all you can afford is the minimum repayment on your loan, then you are loaning too much.
If you can afford to pay 1/2 again or double your loan repayments, even for the next 5 years, you're going to cut more than half the duration of the loan and pay less than a quater of the interest. I can appreciate that this is difficult for people with children and other expenses, but at the end of the day it comes down to people over-extending themselves, wanting to have it all now and not making wise decisions.
The last issue I have with the article is that it tries to give you the impression that you can't make houses more affordable for people without houses without making house prices drop, and that's not strictly true, all you have to do is keep pumping more money into FHOG's and similar schemes. |

A Savage 2 CD has turned up, it would have been lost many LAN's ago, it's a retail copy, we reckon it's Geoff's, but in case it's not, and you've lost one let me know. It isn't in its case.
Also if you ended up with an extra wired black logitech mouse, please return it, if you brought a friend along who won't see this post please ask them if they've got it |

Topped out at 14 people, I had a lot of fun, we played a heap of COD4, a heap of Demigod, a small amount of HAWX and nothing else.
Someone left a computer here (other than Luke who planned on it) please own up to it and come collect it some time soon.
Some people mentioned that COD4 was a little counter-strikey, but I'd say the fact that you don't have to wait long for re-spawns makes it a lot more enjoyable, and the lack of an in round buy phase also keeps it flowing more.
Now I need to keep packing up, then I'm going to play around with demigod in single player, maybe read up on strategy etc.
For the people who went, did you find the Lan as fun as others? I got the feeling that there was a bit of trouble trying to get people to all want to play the same game |

| redundancy != duplication |
|
|
| 05:21pm 15/04/2009 |
| |
A common misunderstanding in software engineering.
If you CAN do the same thing 2 different ways, then you've got redundancy, if one way is disabled, you can still get by using the other way.
If you HAVE to do the same thing 2 different ways then you don't have redundancy, you've just got a cluster fuck where everything takes twice as long as it has to and breaks twice as often as it should. |

Apparently they've sued several file sharers, halted all sales of their electronic books and instructed all vendors to prevent people who have ALREADY PAYED for their electronic copies from re-downloading them (for example if a hard drive were to fail and their current copy was lost).
It's roughly equivalent to Terry Pratchet suing you for lending your copy of THUD to one of your friends, it's insanity.
While reading about it, I came across yet another great argument with evidence that DRM is bunk and giving your stuff away for free makes you more money than it costs you: http://www.baen.com/library/ |
